40 Pico-8s In 2018: Cart #5

It’s Crywankface!!

That is to say, a port of Rogue_AI’s Crywankface.

One of my goals with this project is to do some feature-complete ports of small games. This is one which.. err, spoke to me when it was released a few years ago, and it’s visually and mechanically quite simple which makes it a good fit for the Pico.

In fact, there’s not much difference between playing this version and the original. So if you enjoy playing this then please consider throwing a couple of dollars at the original PC version - it’s free but you can give them money too.

That said, this is not quite a perfect port. I couldn’t get the decay values of the meters exactly right. And I didn’t want to transcribe the entirety of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata into Pico’s music editor so the music loops after a couple of bars. Also if you play for long enough your score will hit Pico’s integer limit and the game will break. I could probably fix it but I figure a game fundamentally about inadequacy should have a few rough edges.

Finally, you’ll need to play this on a PC using a keyboard. Sorry if you’re on a Pocket CHIP or using a gamepad - the original game’s keyboard-switching mechanics more or less demand it. For this reason (as well as the NSFW thing) I’m not uploading it to the Pico-8 BBS.

And special thanks to Joe and Craig for creating the original. You’ve touched me in places you’ll never know.

Feels ashamed for at least fifteen minutes before moving on to cart #6.
